  • Overview

    Position provides direct service in a group setting or on an individual basis to severely emotionally disturbance (SED) children/youth.  The groups are co-lead and provide psycho-social group services.  This position will have responsibilites working with kids in the early childhood intervention program and kids in the youth development program.  Position will work with kids ages 3-10 years old.

     

    Work Schedule: M-F 12pm-6pm

    Responsibilities

    • Provide direct service in a group setting or on an individual basis to severely emotionally disturbance (SED) children/youth and their families.
    • Plan and implement effective treatment, guidance and teaching that provide quality care for each child’s emotional and social development. Interventions will be driven by the client’s individual treatment plan. Staff will utilize a variety of treatment interventions to enhance each child’s progress. Activities will include group psycho educational processes, therapeutic activities, and therapeutic outings to practice social skills.
    • Interaction with the children is a priority for staff.
    • Use MAB and Conscious Discipline techniques in daily interactions and group rooms operations on a daily basis. Mental Health Specialists will participate in trainings for these programs and will study on their own as needed.
    • Actively participate in team meetings and be available as necessary for parent and school meetings.
    • Work collaboratively with the client, family, and treatment team to identify treatment goals and objectives.
    • Complete clinical (daily progress notes, incident reports, etc) and non-clinical (planning sheets, timesheets, etc) documentation correctly and in a timely fashion. Clinical documentation will be monitored for quality of content and proficiency in use of the electronic medical record.
    • Document client attendance as well as attempts toward and actual contact with parents/caregivers, other treatment provider, and collateral contacts.
    • Keep Team Leader informed about attendance problems and client progress toward completion of treatment goals.
    • Remain informed of agency and program developments by reading written communications via letter, memo, e-mail, intra-agency mail, and the intranet.
    • Respect and demonstrate an ability to maintain client confidentiality. Be aware of ethical behavior expectations and act accordingly.
    • Support and actively promote the vision and mission of Family Service and Guidance Center. Act as an ambassador in the community and assist with marketing of our programs as necessary to help facilitate referrals.
    • Pursue ongoing growth in the field, including the area of therapeutic interventions.
    • Transport clients in agency vehicles.
    • Provide proof of personal auto insurance.
    • Promote teamwork among program staff.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
    • In the Early Childhood Intervention Program, staff will also work to ensure compliance with KDHE Childcare Licensing and the Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements.

    Qualifications

    It is preferred that Mental Health Specialists possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a Mental Health related field with some experience working with emotionally disturbed children. An Associate of Arts Degree in a related field or an LMHT with experience will be considered. Individuals with relevant life experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

     

    Must have valid driver's license, current auto insurance and a good motor vehicle report.

      

    Mental Health Specialists must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and must successfully complete a series of background checks that include: Criminal History, Abuse and Neglect, Motor Vehicle Report, Worker’s Compensation, Social Security, and Address Link.

     

    Mental Health Specialists will possess sound judgment and maturity, the capacity for leadership and to promote teamwork. Mental Health Specialists will also possess and utilize effective interpersonal skills to make appropriate contacts as needed with parents and/or the general public.

     

    Mental Health Specialists must collaborate with other agency and non-agency team members to deliver optimal services to clients and families. Mental Health Specialists will also possess the poise to manage intense and crisis situations with children. Proactive thinking in a calm and efficient manner is required in these situations.

      

    Mental Health Specialists must have sufficient ambulatory capabilities to work with children/youth at the office or community settings. This position requires the physical ability to safely restrain children and adolescents who exhibit out of control behavior that threatens the safety of the client or others. Some lifting of children 40 pounds and over is required.

     

    Mental Health Specialists must exhibit satisfactory verbal, written, and computer skills.

     

    Mental Health Specialists are expected to complete an agency and program orientation. Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB), Corporate Compliance, Risk Management, and HIPAA trainings are to be completed within 60 days of employment. These trainings are offered in-house. Other trainings are to be completed as required by supervisory staff.

     

    Mental Health Specialists working in the Early Childhood Intervention Program will also be expected to acquire KDHE in-service certificates for First Aid and Illness, Abuse and Neglect as soon as these training opportunities are available after employment. CPR and First Aid certification and subsequent renewal of certification is also required.

     

    Mental Health Specialists working in the Early Childhood Intervention Program will also be required to have a negative TB skin test and a Health Assessment completed within 30 days of employment.

     

    Working Conditions:

    Office, group room, and community-based working environment which requires a flexible schedule and approach to daily tasks. Group assignment and scheduled working hours may fluctuate to meet changing program needs. This is a direct service position with frequent interruptions. The children/youth often express themselves through verbal or physical acting out. Children/youth swearing at staff or peers or having to restrain acting out children/youth is a common occurrence.

     

    Background checks and drug screen required.
